Admission Policies
Code of Conduct
Staff and visitors of the Museum have the right to an environment free from abuse, harassment, and threatening or inappropriate behavior. The Museum reserves the right to remove any person acting in a manner contrary to these guidelines.
General Guidelines
- Visitors must comply with all posted signs and instructions from museum staff.
- Respect the museum’s exhibits, facilities, and other visitors.
- Maintain a quiet and considerate demeanor in exhibit areas.
- Follow specific guidelines for group visits or guided tours.
- Smoking, vaping, and the use of illegal substances are prohibited on museum property.
Hours of Operation
California Museum of Photography- Thursday & Friday: 12 pm – 5 pm
- Saturday & Sunday: 11 am – 5 pm
- Thursday & Friday: 12 pm – 5 pm
- Saturday & Sunday: 11 am – 5 pm
- Hours are posted on the website, at entrances, and in promotional materials.
- Visitors must exit the premises by the designated closing time.
Tickets
- All visitors, including members and children under free admission categories, must check in at the front desk.
- After check-in visitors will be given a sticker for the day.
- Tickets can only be reserved or purchased for one visit per order.
- Admission tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable.
- If you become sick or are unable to visit the museum, you may still redeem your ticket up to 4 weeks from the original visit date.
- If you qualify for one of our “free admission” categories, you must bring proof of eligibility with you at check-in.
- Pre order tickets are not required, but are recommended to expedite check-in.
Group Visits
- Groups of 10 or more guests are not permitted at entrance. Independent tour operators who are planning to visit with groups of 10 or more visitors are required to contact our Education dept to schedule a self-guided tour. Pre-book here.
- Provide chaperones for school groups or youth organizations (recommended ratio: 1 adult per 10 children).
- Assign a group leader to communicate with museum Education staff.
- Events Stickers will be given tours, classes, guided groups, and large-scale events.
Behavior Expectations
- Appropriate Conduct
- Use of respectful language and behavior is required at all times.
- Visitors may not:
- Touch exhibits unless explicitly allowed.
- Run, shout, or engage in disruptive behavior.
- Bring outside food or beverages into exhibit areas.
- Dress Code
- Footwear and appropriate attire are required at all times.
- Clothing with offensive language or images is not permitted.
- All hoods must be put down before entering the galleries.
- Face masks must be removed momentarily to reveal face to security camera before admission into museum.
- Prohibited Items
- The following items are not allowed in the museum:
- Weapons of any kind.
- All backpacks, sizable satchels and large items of any type should be left at the front reception area.
- Smaller bags, including backpacks, are permitted in the galleries. To avoid accidentally bumping into art, backpacks may not be worn on your back; they must be carried by hand (below the waist) or worn on the front of your body. Umbrellas are not permitted in the galleries, but umbrella stands sit at our front entrance should you have one with you.
- Museum is not liable for any loss or damage of personal property.
- Pets (except service animals).
- The following items are not allowed in the museum:
- Accessibility
- Wheelchairs
- The closest City garage with wheelchair-accessible parking is Mission Square Garage (at the corner of 9th and Market). The ramp exits onto Main and our entrance is immediately across from it. Check current parking rates before parking.
- Our entrances, galleries, theater, screening room, and restrooms are all wheelchair accessible. The Culver Center Screening Room includes wheelchair locations and companion seats. Additionally, the Culver Center Screening Room has a vertical platform lift to help you enter the screening room (otherwise you must use a staircase with a handrail). Elevators are located throughout the building. We do not offer wheelchair loans.
- Seating available in exhibit spaces.
- Restrooms are ADA-compliant. Restrooms are reserved for guests only.
- Service Animals
- Trained service animals are welcome. Following the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), service animals are dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. Emotional support or therapy animals whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA, and unfortunately, are not allowed in the museum.

Safety and Security
- Emergency Procedures
- In case of emergency please follow marked emergency exits and evacuation routes. Follow all staff instructions to exit the premise.
- Lost and Found
- Lost and found is in secured space, please consult with front desk for any lost items.
- Items will be held for 15 days before disposal or donation.
- Child Safety
- Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
- Staff will follow protocols for reuniting lost children with their guardians.
Photography, Filming, and Sketching
- Personal Photography
- Non-flash photography is allowed unless otherwise indicated.
- Tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks are not permitted in exhibit areas.
- Commercial Filming
- Commercial photography or filming requires prior approval from museum management.
- Filming must not disrupt regular museum operations.
- Sketching in the Galleries
- Sketching, in pencil only, is permitted on all floors and galleries of UCR ARTS for non-commercial purposes, provided that the following rules are followed. Sketching is also permitted in most special exhibitions; please inquire at the Welcome Desk about current exhibitions and guidelines.
- Paper or sketchbooks should not exceed 14 x 17 inches. Easels are not permitted.
- Never point at a work using your pencil or any other object. Please do not touch the works for any reason.
- A reasonable distance must be maintained from the work to allow a clear view for others who may wish to observe the work.
- During times of high-volume visitation, sketching may be restricted. Sketching is permitted only in locations that do not obstruct an entrance or exit, do not compromise the safety or security of the art on view and/or other UCR ARTS visitors, and do not obstruct the view of the art.
- Sketching, in pencil only, is permitted on all floors and galleries of UCR ARTS for non-commercial purposes, provided that the following rules are followed. Sketching is also permitted in most special exhibitions; please inquire at the Welcome Desk about current exhibitions and guidelines.
Food and Beverage
- Food, drink, and chewing gum are not allowed inside museum galleries and must be left at the front desk.
- Water in sealed bottles may be carried in exhibit areas but must not be opened.
